Restaurants are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of technology to improve management information and business profitability. As a result, many restaurants are upgrading their POS and back office systems to better compete in a growing market. As individual and chain restaurants grow in number, competition increases. At the same time, use of the Internet by both restaurants and consumers is projected to continue to grow significantly. Approximately thirty (30) percent of all restaurant operators have an e-mail account for customer response or comment. Approximately fifty (50) percent of all table service restaurants currently have a basic web site, however the majority of these sites are informational only, and have either limited or no interactive functionality with the consumer. In most cases it is too expensive (and/or the expertise is not readily available) for individual restaurants to undertake the complex development required for applications like online ordering and reservations.
